The rose is perhaps the most beloved flower of all flowers. Its fragrance has captivated kings and queens and has inspired full rose gardens that are spectacular to see.
Fossil evidence of roses indicate that the flower has probably been in existence for 35 million years. This long history as a perfume and medicine during the reign of the Roman Empire is legendary because of its uses in everything from celebrations to healing skin rashes and indigestion.
During the fifteenth century, the rose was used as a symbol for the factions fighting to control England. The white rose symbolized York, and the red rose symbolized Lancaster, as a result, the conflict became known as the “War of the Roses.” This is perhaps the first time the color of the rose represented something.
York, the white rose, represented a religious symbol. It represented purity and nobility. The white rose was believed to be the oldest type of rose and that the earth first had white roses.
The House of Lancaster‘s badge during in modern times the rose was worn by 55th (West Lancashire) Territorial Division during their campaign in Belgium their motto was “They win or die, who wear the Rose of Lancaster”. Upon Henry Tudors, ascension to the throne the rose was merged with the White Rose of York to form the Tudor Rose.
The color of this rose was bravery, progression, the bold and the new. So it was the bold and the new overthrowing the white and pure. This historical story may have been what started the tradition of giving meanings to the color of roses.

- Give two roses and you are saying that you like this person just as much as they like you, the “feeling is mutual”
- Give three roses to your sweetheart as a reminder that you love them still!
- Give seven roses and you are telling your lover you will be together forever
- Give 10 roses to show someone how you feel about them that you think they are “perfect.”
- Give your love 12 roses to ask them to be yours, or to remind them that you are there for them always.
- Don’t give your lover 13 roses, give them to a friend to let them know you appreciate their enduring friendship.
