As we head into the New Year, social media is filled with people posting their resolutions for the coming year.
Dieting and exercise are two of the most common things being posted. It won’t take long before the excuses begin to appear why those resolutions are going down the drain.
You have to cook for your family, so it’s hard for you to diet. Diet food is too expensive and you are too busy to follow through.
You can’t afford a gym membership, you don’t like going to the gym alone, or you are too busy. Looks like the same list, same excuses, just a different year. I, myself, have made some of those same resolutions and the excuses are very familiar. There was no list of resolutions for me this year, instead I decided to make changes.
Dieting and exercise may be what you need to change but first making changes on the inside may bring about the things you want to change on the outside.
If you are stressed, your life full of clutter and chaos, how can you expect to achieve anything? Start this year by decluttering your life, and change the way you look at yourself.
How you feel inside can truly affect the way you show yourself to others. If you are uncomfortable in your own skin, you project this to the outside world. Let’s begin to change your mindset and make you more comfortable with yourself.
Meditation is one of the easiest ways to begin, but often meditation is the hardest thing to achieve. Personally for me, I have a hard time shutting off my thoughts as my brain doesn’t get the message. Often different scents can help you learn to shut down and relax. Cinnamon, vanilla and lavender are just a few that seem to work for me.
Find a quiet place, sit and just be still, no thoughts, no worrying about what you should be doing instead. This may take some time for you to get to this place as it seems we live in a world of multi-tasking but practice makes perfect and soon you will be able to turn off the outside world, if even just for a few minutes.
Make this the year you quit worrying about how others perceive you and just be the person that makes you happy. Easy to say, hard to do, but once you feel confident in being you, others will begin to see that side of you. Once you are good with yourself, the rest of your life will start settling into place. Inner peace will bring out your outer confidence allowing you to fix the things you want to change.
Instead of trying to diet, learn to eat differently. A balanced diet, eating regular meals certain times a day will bring about a healthier you.
Try sitting down at the table, even if you are alone, and turning off the electronics while you eat. Yes, that means no television or cell phones, not to mention no eating at the computer. If you have family, make dinner a time to eat together and reflect on your day.
The gym can be expensive and also hard if you are working out alone. There are a lot of great free exercise videos on youtube, and since they are done by real people, it might make you feel like you have a buddy to work out with so you’re not doing it by yourself.
The world wasn’t built in a day, so don’t expect to achieve all you want right away. It might take a month or even the whole year, but no matter how long it takes, it will make a big difference and worth the wait.
Now, let’s throw out that list of resolutions and instead start making changes. This can be the year you start making the life you desire and deserve.
It’s your life so you are the only one that can make the necessary changes you need, no one else can do it for you. Connecting your mind, body and spirit can be just the thing to make this New Year your year to shine.
